WHAT DOES NOMADIC FUTURES MEAN?

Nomadic Futures is a long-term program by Kairos Futura that explores the future of nomadic living. The program brings together artists, designers, scientists, and innovators from Kenya and the US to imagine and create new ways of living that are more sustainable, equitable, and resilient.

Goals

  • To imagine and create new ways of living that are more sustainable, equitable, and resilient.

  • To explore the opportunities and challenges of a nomadic future.

  • To develop innovative solutions to the challenges of climate change, environmental degradation, and social inequality.

  • To build community and collaboration between artists, designers, scientists, and innovators from Kenya and the US.

Activities

  • Workshops and discussions on the future of nomadic living.

  • Prototyping and design of both practical solutions and wearable art pieces that respond to the future of nomadic living.

  • Exhibitions and performances that showcase the work of the Nomadic Futures program.

  • Partnerships with other organizations that are working to build a more sustainable, equitable, and resilient future.

Impact

The Nomadic Futures program aims to have a positive impact on the future of our planet. By bringing together artists, designers, scientists, and innovators from Kenya and the US, the program is creating new ideas and solutions that can help us to build a more sustainable, equitable, and resilient future.

Mass Migration Due to Climate and Political Issues

The world is facing a mass migration crisis. Millions of people are being forced to leave their homes due to climate change, environmental degradation, and political instability. These migrants are often forced to live in precarious conditions, and they often lack access to basic necessities such as housing, power, and water.

The Urgent Need for Nomadic Living Solutions

The Nomadic Futures program is part of a growing movement to address the urgent need for nomadic living solutions. These solutions must be sustainable, equitable, and resilient. They must also be culturally appropriate, and they must be designed to meet the needs of the people who are most affected by mass migration.

Housing

One of the most pressing needs for nomadic people is housing. Traditional housing is often not sustainable or resilient in the face of climate change. Nomadic Futures is working to develop new types of housing that are more sustainable, equitable, and resilient. These new types of housing could include:

  • Sustainable and resilient shelters that can withstand extreme weather events.

  • Modular and portable housing that can be easily transported and assembled.

  • Community-based housing that is designed to support social and economic development.

Power

Another critical need for nomadic people is power. Traditional sources of power, such as fossil fuels, are often not sustainable or equitable. Nomadic Futures is working to develop new sources of power that are more sustainable, equitable, and resilient. These new sources of power could include:

  • Renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power.

  • Microgrids that can provide power to small communities.

Water

Access to clean water is essential for human health and well-being. Nomadic people often face challenges in accessing clean water. Nomadic Futures is working to develop new ways to provide nomadic people with access to clean water. These new ways could include:

  • Water harvesting technologies that collect and store rainwater.

  • Water treatment technologies that make water safe to drink.

  • Water distribution systems that deliver water to nomadic communities.
